Nintendo has offered to replace 3.2 million Wii remote straps after users complained that the cord broke too easily.
The Wii, which sells for $279.00 at Best Buy stores in Canada, went on sale in November, just in time for the Christmas rush. But soon afterwards, gamers began reporting cases of the device's wrist strap snapping during game play.
"A lot of people are saying that strap has not been well made, and is actually snapping and people are throwing their controllers into their televisions and breaking their $3,000 plasmas," said CTV's technology expert Kris Abel.
A spokesperson for the company insisted that the offer was “not a recall.” The current wrist-strap is perfectly safe and passed all required tests according to the statement.
The act put out by Nintendo has been taken to ensure peace of mind among the Wii’s early user base.
Nintendo says that it has already started shipping Wii remote control accessories with the updated strap.
The company also announced that it has recalled 200,000 AC adapters for the Japanese version of the Nintendo DS and DS Lite handhelds.
Nintendo is aiming to begin shipping replacement straps directly to consumers on December 21st and says that people shoudl allow 5 to 9 days for delivery in the US and Canada.
"The Wii Remote is meant to be gripped, and the wrist straps are a secondary measure," the press release states.
"We have found that some consumers get more excited playing Wii Sports than we could have imagined. This resulted in a very small number of wrist straps breaking. We have replaced the broken wrist straps and continue to reinforce with consumers the safe and fun use of our products."
Nintendo recalled 200,000 AC adapters for its DS and DS Lite consoles in Japan on Friday, saying the recall would not affect adapters overseas.
Officials expected only a small impact on earnings.
